Ever since I was a boy, I loved working with tools and building things. In high school, Design and Technology was the class I looked forward to most. After years in corporate finance, I knew I wanted to create something real rather than make money for its own sake. I trained at the Chippendale International School of Furniture and set up my workshop here in the Okanagan, British Columbia. This place shapes the work—its lakes, mountains, and forests. I source much of my wood from a local miller in Summerland, and the drive back along the lake with each slab reminds me of the care this process deserves.

I’m drawn to this craft by a deep respect for its roots; there is a quiet beauty in knowing Jesus Himself worked with wood, a tradition of humble, honest labor carried forward by master woodworkers like Sam Maloof and George Nakashima. I believe we’ve lost the creative risk-taking that once defined furniture. Mass production has made so much of it look the same and last only a few years. But when families gather around a table, that piece should reflect who they are. At Custance Home, I get to know my clients and create both staple and highly specific pieces, always experimenting with new ideas. Above all, this work is done with love and care.
